It is one of the most common questions before starting a website: should I build it in code or on WordPress? There is no universal answer — it depends on what you need. Let’s compare them honestly, without selling one at the expense of the other.
What each one means
- A custom-coded website — built from scratch with modern technologies (Astro, Next.js, HTML/CSS). Every line is written for your project.
- WordPress — a platform where the site is assembled from themes and plugins. The most popular in the world, with an admin panel where you edit the content.

When to choose a custom-coded site
- You want maximum speed and best-in-class SEO (a shop, a campaign landing page, a site that has to rank).
- You have a distinctive design and don’t want to look like everyone else.
- The content changes rarely and you prefer “set it and forget it”.
When to choose WordPress
- You want to edit the copy, photos and articles yourself, often and without a developer.
- You have an active blog or add content frequently.
- Your team needs to run the site without any technical knowledge.
A myth worth dispelling: “WordPress is slow.” The platform isn’t the problem — heavy themes and page builders are. A WordPress site with a custom theme on clean code is fast. That is exactly why my WordPress service avoids page builders.
My recommendation
- A presentation site that has to be fast and bring in clients → code (website development).
- You want full control over content, a blog, frequent updates → WordPress with a custom theme.
The key isn’t the platform, it is the execution: thoughtful design, clean code, performance and SEO. Both options can be excellent — or disastrous — depending on who builds them.
