What SEO is and why it matters

What SEO is, briefly

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) means optimising your website so that it appears as high as possible in Google’s results. When someone searches for “dental clinic Chisinau” or “lawyer Bucharest”, SEO decides who shows up first.

It is not magic and it is not a trick — it is a set of technical and content best practices that help Google understand what you offer and to whom.

Why it matters

90% of clicks go to the first 5 results. If you are on page 2, you effectively don’t exist.

Organic traffic is free. Unlike ads (Google Ads, Facebook Ads), SEO traffic doesn’t cost you per click. The investment goes into optimising the site, not into an advertising budget.

It works around the clock. A well-optimised article can bring in traffic for years with no further investment.

Technical SEO — the foundation

Before content, the site has to be technically flawless:

  • Speed — Google penalises slow websites. Your PageSpeed score should be above 90.
  • Mobile-friendly — Google indexes the mobile version of your site first.
  • HTTPS — an SSL certificate is mandatory. Sites without https are flagged as “not secure”.
  • A clear structure — logical URLs, hierarchical headings (H1 → H2 → H3).
  • Sitemap.xml — the map of your site for Google.

Local SEO — the secret weapon for local businesses

If your business has a physical location, local SEO is the most effective marketing channel you have:

  1. Google Business Profile — create and optimise the profile (it’s free)
  2. Local keywords — “service + city” on every relevant page
  3. Consistent NAP — identical Name, Address and Phone everywhere
  4. Reviews — ask happy clients for reviews
  5. LocalBusiness schema markup — code on the site that helps Google understand you

What you can do yourself, right now

  • Create a Google Business Profile if you don’t have one
  • Check your site’s speed on PageSpeed Insights
  • Make sure every page has a unique title and description
  • Write content that is useful to your clients (articles, FAQ)
  • Ask satisfied clients for Google reviews

When you need professional help

You can handle basic SEO yourself. But for serious results — keyword research, advanced technical optimisation, a content strategy — you need someone with experience.

A site built correctly from the start, with SEO baked into its structure, is far more effective than optimising an existing site after the fact.
